The rise of plastic surgery for men

|

Plastic surgery has enjoyed a surge of popularity over the last few years. More of us are realising we don’t have to feel self-conscious with the way we look and that there are plenty of both invasive and non-invasive procedures to consider, and one of the most rapidly growing sectors of the market is plastic surgery for men. Men are increasingly undergoing treatment to restore their youth, get the shape they’ve always wanted or simply feel better about themselves, and there’s no sign of this growth slowing down any time soon.

Facts and figures

These days men account for around 10% of all cosmetic surgery procedures in the UK, and that’s not even taking into account non-invasive procedures such as fillers and Botox. It may not sound like a lot, but when you look a little deeper and consider how many treatments are being performed you’ll soon see why it’s got the industry talking – figures from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) state that eyelid surgery was up 11% last year, face/neck lifts enjoyed a 14% rise and brow lifts were up a pretty impressive 19%, with a lot of men feeling the pressure to turn back the clock and look a little better.

Popular treatments

According to BAAPS figures, the five most popular male treatments in 2012 were as follows:

• Rhinoplasty. Nose jobs continue to be the most popular treatment for men with 952 procedures being performed last year, and that’s not even taking into account the growing trend for non-surgical nose jobs which could easily add to the figures.

• Blepharoplasty. 758 men underwent eyelid surgery in 2012, making it the second most popular treatment.

• Breast reduction. Male breast reduction continues to be popular, accounting for 642 operations, with men realising that no amount of hardcore gym sessions can fix the issue of gynaecomastia.

• Ear correction. 503 ear correction procedures were performed on men last year.

• Lipo. Lipo continues to be incredibly popular, with 433 men undergoing the procedure to shift that stubborn flab.

As you can see, male surgeries are continuing to prove popular. And, given that the BAAPS only represents 1 in 3 surgeons the actual figures could be even higher, with individual clinics quoting increasingly large numbers of men undergoing treatments.

Reasons for surgery

There are plenty of reasons someone might want to take the plunge. Men are becoming increasingly competitive, both in their personal lives and in the job market, and a nip and tuck here and there could give someone the edge. Ageing can take its toll and sometimes no amount of diet and exercise can deliver the necessary changes to body shape, and then there’s the fact that a lot of men simply want to look and feel better. Are you one of them?

Thinking of taking the plunge?
