Cosmetic Surgery
The top 5 cosmetic surgery treatments for men
As we have previously covered in this blog, plastic surgery is becoming increasingly more popular amongst men. This male encroachment upon a traditionally female dominated service has been identified as a side effect of an increasingly competitive, youth obsessed society. Men want to look their best, to enhance their professional and social standing, and to strengthen egos that a steady stream of merciless media campaigns have damaged.
While released back in February, cosmetic surgery statistics for 2013, provided by The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), provide an extremely useful overview of the cosmetic surgery industry as a whole. Amongst many other useful nuggets of information, the statistics show that the number of cosmetic surgeries performed on men had risen by 16% since 2012, and provide a list of the most popular cosmetic surgeries amongst men. In this blog post we’ll take a look at the top five most popular:
1) Rhinoplasty (Nose Correction) – (1037 performed in 2013, up 9% from 2012)
One of the most prominent features on the face, and also amongst one of the most varied in terms of proportion, it’s not tremendously surprising to see nose corrective cosmetic surgery at the top of the list. A quick procedure, with minimal complications, the nose’s skin is separated from the supporting bone and cartilage, which is reshaped to the client’s exacting specification, before the skin is reattached and healing can begin.
2) Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) – (887 performed in 2013, up 17% from 2012)
Blepharoplasty surgery represents, for many men, an anti-ageing alternative to botox. Incisions are made along the inner creases of a patient’s eyelids, meaning that the scars will be naturally camouflaged. Excess fat, muscle tissue and loose skin are then removed. After the incisions have been stitched and healed, eyelids and the surrounding tissue will appear to be smoother and younger looking.
3) Male Breast Reduction – (796 performed in 2013, up 24% from 2012)
A common assumption when discussing Gynaecomastia (enlarged male breasts) is that this condition is always a direct result of obesity. While this is sometimes the case, there are numerous additional factors that can cause an increase in male breast size; including certain diseases and drugs.
Male breast reduction generally consists of a small incision being made underneath the nipple, facilitating liposuction. In some cases multiple incisions are required, in order to better reach fatty deposits. Once the operation is complete, and the patient discharged, a support garment is required to be worn for a few weeks after, to ensure best results.
4) Liposuction – (554 performed in 2013, up 28% from 2012)
Another aesthetic enhancing procedure, liposuction can be applied to reduce the build up of fat in numerous areas of the body. In terms of what to expect from both the procedure and associated recovery time, both can vary a large degree depending on how much fat needs to be removed, and from how many sites. Incision sites are chosen as carefully as possible to camouflage scarring, reducing the likelihood of any visible evidence of the surgery being left behind.
5) Otoplasty (Ear Correction) – (543 performed in 2013, up 8% from 2012)
Another extremely prominent feature of the face, many men are sensitive to the perceived size of their ears, and ear corrective surgery is an easy, fast way to solve this problem, and restore confidence and self esteem to a patient. Surgeons have a variety of different procedures at their disposal to correct ear defects or deformities, from ear pinning, to reconstruction with rib cartilage. Whichever is required, a more regular ear shape can be restored quickly and easily.
