Plastic Surgeons’ Warning on Procedures

|

With cosmetic surgery holidays abroad increasingly advertised, a new study at the University of Leeds has highlighted a complication rate of approaching a fifth (16.5%), with almost a tenth of patients requiring NHS help once they’ve returned home.

At the same time a survey from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) shows a steady rise in problems, with more than half of all members showing an increase in issues of between 25% and 35% in recent years.

The government has already called for aggressive marketing in the overseas sector to be toned down, especially where there are deals such as free flights offered with multiple procedures.

Many of the patients affected by the problems are under 30, perhaps because this group would typically be especially keen to take up financial incentives.

A straw poll among members of this organisation also found that the main reasons for complications were a lack of aftercare and outdated or poorly performed procedures.

Consultant plastic surgeon and president of BAAPS Rajiv Grover said: “Patients can be forced to pay for the cost of extra treatment once back in the UK after “makeover holidays” because generally there is no aftercare. The NHS also assumes the cost of righting any wrongs. And it can take weeks or months after the procedure for complications to develop.”

Lack of Aftercare

Another study, carried out in Britain and published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal revealed that an overwhelming majority (90%) of websites advertising cosmetic surgery tourism do not provide any details of potential complications or dangers.

So, while many clients who have cosmetic surgery overseas may well have a trouble-free experience and be perfectly happy with the end results, that’s clearly not the case for everyone – and these trips can turn out to be a false economy.

Whether you’re thinking about ear pinning or wrinkle fillers, the reality is that having your procedure done in the UK is likely to be safer and done by better qualified surgeons in a better regulated industry. Your surgeon, for example, should discuss any potential risks openly with you from the outset, as well as being clear on pricing structure.
