Eyes are the windows to the soul. We connect with each other in a large part by the emotions and feelings conveyed through our eyes. Because of this, they are constantly on show and the more expressive you are often the most age takes its toll. The skin around the eyes is some of the thinnest on the face and so is more susceptible to the loss of collagen and elastin that comes with ageing. Complaints include lines and wrinkles, crow’s feet, hollowness or sunkenness under the eyes, dark circles, eye bags, and droopy eyelids.
Smiling causes the corners of the eyes to fold and over time this causes crow’s feet. As elastin and collagen are lost, fat pads drop and create surface irregularities, hollowness and eye bags. Volume loss under the eyes can compress the skin causing an increase in pigmentation density which presents as dark circles. Screen time increases squinting which causes wrinkles to form between the eyebrows and around the eyes. Sun exposure and other lifestyle choices can slow the production of collagen which can cause a crepey, dry appearance to the skin.
Clearly, there are a great many issues that can lessen the appearance of the eyes. We have different solutions depending on the cause. For overactive muscles causing crow’s feet wrinkles or vertical lines between the eyebrows, we have muscle relaxing injections. Lost volume can be replaced using dermal fillers to the tear trough, eyebrow or forehead areas. For pigmentation, we have prescription skin care, skin peels and medical needling. If you have hooded eyelids or eyebags, then an upper and/or lower blepharoplasty surgery is indicated. Sometimes there are a combination of treatments necessary to optimise the complex area of the face. Doing them in the correct order and with skill will restore your youthfully refreshed eyes.
